What we do

The City Attorney is appointed by the Mayor and is subject to confirmation by the Common Council.

Our team handles the legal services necessary to:

  • Provide and coordinate legal representation of the city.
  • Process and review claims against the city.
  • Prosecute municipal ordinance violations.
  • Advises the mayor, alderpersons, various city boards, commissions and committees, and all city departments.
  • Drafts city ordinances, resolutions and reviews all city contracts.
  • Collects debts owed to the city.
  • Coordinates the legal aspect of city real estate and property transactions, including Tax Incremental Financing.
  • Represents the city in administrative and quasi-judicial hearings.

The City Attorney works for the interest of the city as whole, and represents the City as their client. The City Attorney is unable to provide legal advice to individuals.
