Roofing, siding, and window replacement are generally considered maintenance and do not require a building permit when the replacement is similar in style to the existing material or product.
A building permit is required when the work changes the style or exterior appearance of the building. Examples include:
- Replacing asphalt shingles with a different roofing material, such as metal roofing
- Changing from horizontal to vertical siding or installing a different type of exterior finish system
- Replacing an existing window with a different window style, such as changing a casement window to a double-hung window
Even when a building permit is not required, all work must comply with applicable building and zoning requirements.
How to Apply
If a building permit is required, apply through our self-service portal. You can upload required documents, track the status of your application, and make payments online.
Application requirements vary depending on the type and scope of work. You may be asked to provide product information, plans, photos, or other documentation showing the proposed exterior changes.
Re-roofing, re-siding, and window replacement projects do not require Design Review Board approval. However, changes to the exterior appearance of a residential property require staff review. Photos of all sides of the existing home and information showing the proposed materials, colors, and design may be required.
Additional information or documents may be requested during the review process.
